CAAP
Census Aggregation and Accessibility Project:
The CAAP Project is a public service project maintained by the Division of Government Research (DGR) at the University of New Mexico. It has been designed to provide easy access to selected census and demographic data for the state of New Mexico. This project is unfunded and is thus being developed slowly as resources are made available. The following web pages provide geographic and tabular data in formats that are directed to both experienced and inexperienced users.
Please note that only selected portion of the census data are made available. It is beyond the scope of this project to make available all of the data collected by the US Census Bureau.
The SF4 data and ArcGIS Server facilities are currently being prepared. Some portions are currently available, others will be finished soon!
The Census 2000 data can be viewed interactively using a web based GIS viewer (ESRI's ArcIMS). In addition, a simple to use free GIS viewer package (ESRI's ArcReader) is provided for users to download and view GIS maps on their computer. Future developments are planned that will allow more comprehensive census and demographic data to be viewed and downloaded using new web based GIS technology (Esri's ArcGIS Server).
The census data available through the CAAP have been processed, aggregated, and compiled into formats (ArcExport, shapefile, Geodatabase, dBase, and SAS) that can be downloaded for further use. Having census data available in these standard GIS and statistical formats, where the tabular (attribute) and geographic data have been combined is beneficial to many users that do not have the time, facilities, or experience to work with the raw data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau .
For those users that need the census data in non-GIS formats, UNM's BBER provides data tables in Microsoft's Excel format on their Census 2000 Data web page.
SUMMARY FILES :
Results from the Census 2000 will be contained in a a series of five files, Summary File 1 through 4 have been released and are available for download from the U.S. Census Bureau web page, see (release schedule). Data from Summary File 1 and 2 are based on the so-called short form, it presents counts and basic cross-tabulations of information collected from all people and housing units. Summary File 3 and 4 are sample data products and are based on the so-called long form, i.e. additional questions were asked of a sample (generally 1-in-6) of persons and housing units. For the CAAP we used SF1 and SF4 data.
In addition, maps and data are presented using the Census 2000 Redistricting Data (Public Law 94-171) Summary File - New Mexico. These data were derived from the basic question on all census questionaires.
